SAVE THE WASTE: PACKAGING SPROUTED FROM A BEAN

The first food packaging paper derived from the by-products of bean processing is the brainchild of Pedon – eco-sustainable, 100% recyclable and the result of the Save the Waste project, a virtuous and circular economic model that helps both the environment and community.

Save the Waste promotes an integrated supply chain which creates and distributes value to all the people involved and contributes to the culture of corporate responsibility, from the manufacturer all the way to the end consumer. The process begins with the selection of seeds guaranteed to be GMO-free, grown by thousands of farming families which are part of programs aimed at economic and agricultural development, such as the cultivation agreement established in 2013 between ACOS Ethiopia PLC – a company belonging to the Pedon Group – and two unions, the agricultural cooperatives which work with the state of Oromia in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

It is an agreement which forms part of the "Agricultural Supply Chains in Oromia" project, which was created in collaboration with the Italian Development Cooperation in order to promote ethical and sustainable supply chains. This allows Ethiopian farmers to actively contribute towards the improved quality of their produce, while respecting international production standards, using a strict approach to the supply chain, and contributing to sale of their produce.

Indeed it is between cultivation and processing that the waste by-products are collected and used to produce a new kind of paper known as CRUSH Fagiolo, which reduces the use of virgin tree pulp by 15% and lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 20%. The result is a GMO-free and FSC-certified packaging bag which can be in direct contact with produce – thereby eliminating the inner sleeve within the pack -- which includes 30% post-consumer recycled fibre.

The environmentally friendly inks and the transparent PLA window, which too is produced from vegetable waste, make this eco-sustainable packaging 100% recyclable. In addition, all the energy which is used throughout the process – from manufacturing the paper to packaging – comes from renewable sources.

It is also significant to mention the partnership which exists within the project with two Vicenza-based companies, Favini and Lucaprint, which shared their knowledge and research, and, in so doing, facilitated innovation. CRUSH Fagiolo paper was made by Favini, a company which specialises in the production of ecological paper and CRUSH in particular, which contains by-products from the agro-industrial supply chain and has realised this new paper which is perfect for Pedon packaging. We also have Lucaprint to thank for the development of the printing solution, an eco-sustainable packaging

The new packaging is ready to be used this year in the well-known and popularLenticchia Pedina range, Pedon’s ethical lentils, a range which has, for more than ten years, supported humanitarian campaigns which champion the rights and wellbeing of children. It does so by donating fifteen cents from every box sold to the Every One project, the global campaign launched by Save The Children in 2009 to combat child mortality and to guarantee healthcare and services for mothers and children in thirty-eight countries around the world.

"We are proud of this project, which marks the shift from a linear model to a circular economy",says Remo Pedon, MD of the group of the same name. "Save the Waste provides huge advantages which impact the environment, by creating and distributing value for the community and including all the players along the supply chain".

Today, the Vicenza-based company is a leading player on the global field in the sector of grains and legumes, and with Save the Waste it is confirming its commitment not only to promote economic and social development in the regions where it operates but also to support and protect local communities and cultures through independent ethical initiatives, such as the school within its Ethiopian factory in Nazareth.

Founded in 2005, today the school hosts 250 children from three to 13 years old, who study and learn subjects in both English and Amharic, the local language, with the help of 12 teachers. The books, notebooks and school uniforms are free for each child, and they can also make use of the on-premises cafeteria and the school bus service. Thanks to this project, children in the local community have access to education from a young age and are removed from the child labour which, unfortunately, is found elsewhere.
